Master Modern Greek Studies

Modern Greek Studies, as a branch of linguistics, literature, and cultural studies, deals with the language, literature, cultural history, and geography of Greece, Cyprus, formerly Greek-speaking regions (the Balkan Peninsula, Asia Minor, and Southern Italy), and the modern diaspora from approximately 1500 to the present day, with a particular focus on the period after 1800. Core areas of the discipline, comprehensively represented in research and teaching, include the Modern Greek language and linguistic history, the Modern Greek literary and cultural history from the 16th century to the present, the representation and theory of intercultural relations in Greek linguistic and cultural spheres, textual analysis, interpretation, and criticism within Modern Greek literature and its historical analysis, as well as the analysis of Greek and international cultural phenomena in film and other media. Research employs methods from literary studies, linguistics, philology, and history.

The research-oriented Master's program in Modern Greek Studies imparts substantial expertise in the field of Modern Greek cultural and literary history, including an in-depth knowledge of the Modern Greek language and its historical development from the Early Modern period to the present day.
